Fr. Melvin Shorter, C.P.

Fr. Melvin A. Shorter is the first of two children born to the late Melvin and Edith Shorter of Baltimore, Maryland. He was educated in the public schools of Baltimore,

graduating from Baltimore City College (high school.) He graduated from Coppin State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Upon graduation, Fr. Shorter worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. He worked in the Division of Personnel as Assistant Director of the agency's Employee Assistance Program working specifically with the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Program.


In 1981 Fr. Shorter entered the Passionist Community taking first vows in 1982. In 1982, Fr. Shorter entered Catholic Theological Union, graduating with aM. Div. with a concentration in Word and Worship. In 1986, he took final vows and was ordained a priest in New York. As a Passionist, Fr. Shorter's ministry included Itinerated Preaching and Parish Ministry. He served as Pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Atlanta, GA from 1990 - 2004. He was elected to the Provincial Council from 1998 - 2004. In 1996, Fr. Shorter served as one of five Catholic Chaplains to the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, GA.


Since the ending his term as Provincial Consultor, Fr. Shorter has returned to full time Itinerated Preaching giving Parish Missions, Retreats to Clergy and Laity, Parish Revivals and Days and Evenings of Recollection. He presently resides in New York.
