Opening Doors

My arrival at Milaby’s house was announced by 4 year old Blanca, standing in a towel, declaring, “Bañame Nina” (Bathe me Nina!). At the age of four she speaks with authority. Blanca led me to the water and I filled the bucket. Then she stood stoic, in a way I’ve never seen a 4 year old and instructed me to pour the water over her head. As the cold water covered her, there was no squirming, shout or whine. There was a strange sense of honor in bathing her that I don’t know how to explain or describe. When she announced that her bath was finished, I wrapped her in the towel and picked her up in my arms and she became the tiny, little Blanca who I feed, who wants to be held. Blanca’s family has become a part of me.

I came to know this family through the Comedor Infantil Pasionista, a free lunch program in the poorest neighborhood in Talanga, which we opened this past November. Blanca and her 9 year old brother are but 2 of the 24 children who come to eat every Monday through Friday. On those days you will also find several of the mothers, who come to cook, clean and care for the children.

Though there is no typical Comedor day, one might look like this: We volunteers walk to the Nueva San Diego neighborhood, better known as Pantanol (“Swamp”), on the other side of town around 10 am to open the Comedor. If Marlin isn’t already there, she soon arrives, opens the kitchen and fires up the wood burning stove. As the fire gets going, two mothers show up and prepare vegetables, make juice and clean the floor and tables.

While the Mothers work in the small kitchen, the children delve into the coloring books, jump ropes, play dough and soccer balls. The noise level steadily grows until someone pokes their head out of the kitchen and declares the food ready. At this moment, the chaos peaks, as everyone scrambles to clean up, call the kids from the soccer field across the street, and have them all standing quietly in a circle. Grace is said, a line forms for hand washing and then there is a miraculous moment of silence only to be broken by spilled juice, requests for second helpings and loud declarations of “I’m finished”. The mothers clean up, children fly out the door, the refrigerator is checked for tomorrow’s supplies and the whirlwind 3 hours of Comedor are over, until the next day.

As we leave Comedor, we run into the crumbling shell of a building next door that was intended to be a community center. Empty and abandoned, it seems to sadly represent many people’s sentiments for Nueva San Diego. And yet it is the Comedor that has now become the community center. Inside there are reading classes for illiterate moms and children who aren’t in school, a medical brigade offers check-ups and medicine to people with little or no access to health care, Christmas parties, birthday parties and farewell parties all take place here.

Most importantly, Comedor is an arena for building relationships and here the people embrace us and take us in as their own. They invite us into their homes, tell us their stories and listen to ours. They laugh, dance, cry, play and work with us. Like Blanca, they teach us and guide us. It was in the opening of the doors of Comedor that the doors of Nueva San Diego were opened to us.

Passionist Ordinations

Passionist Ordination from Passionists on Vimeo.

The Passionists joyfully announce the ordination to the priesthood of Enno Dango, C.P. and to the diaconate of Hugo R. Esparaza-Perez, C.P.,  Alfredo Ocampo, C.P. and Michael Rowe, C.P.

A message from the newly ordained:

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to God for the gift of our ordination to the diaconate and priesthood, and for the people who have shared this journey with us. So many people have made this day possible. In a special way, we wish to thank Passionist Bishop Neil Tiedemann for being God’s instrument in our ordination. We thank our Passionist Community of brothers, sisters and all the laity associated with us who have offered their friendship, wisdom and prayers throughout the years.

We are most grateful to our families for their love, sacrifice and constant support as we have sought to answer God’s call to religious life and ordained ministry. Along with our friends from many different parts of the world, our families have nurtured our love for God and our readiness to preach the gospel through our words deeds for the rest of our lives.

As we journey together, may God bless us and may the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts.

Web Page. Information on the official web page at the link shown here will be available in English, Spanish, French, Polish, Italian and German.  http://www.madrid11.com

Young Passionists Encounter.
I would like to inform you once again that the World Youth Day will afford an opportunity for an encounter on Formation, and dialog, between young Passionist Religious and the General Council. This encounter will take place on the 12th – 13th – 14th August 2011 at our Peñafiel Retreat House and Community, situated some 190 Km (119 miles) from Madrid.

Participation Young Passionists. Our hope is that the above-mentioned encounter will enjoy the participation of Passionist youth from our various Configurations. For more precise information and in order to establish the number of young religious who will represent the various areas, a later letter will be sent to Provincial, Vice Provincial and Regional Vicariate Superiors. Likewise, in the course of the coming General Synod in Rome this October we can talk about the WYD encounter.

Lay Youth. Regarding the participation of young lay people belonging to our extended Passionist Family, or of youth in one way or another associated with our ministry, the Planning Commission of our Spanish Provinces has proposed the following plan:

  1. It is recommended that each parish or youth group attached to one of our shrines or Retreat Houses sign-up for the WYD on their own, for the week starting Monday afternoon August 15th and ending the morning of Monday August 22nd .
  2. At the moment of signing-up it is recommended that the all-inclusive Package A1 be selected, as this provides for both board and lodging (breakfast, lunch and dinner.)
  3. A special day will be set aside for Passionist Lay Youth. An invitation is to be extended to those groups attached to us to participate in an encounter at our St. Gabriel’s school (“Colegio San Gabriel”) in Alcalá de Henares, situated approximately 25 Km (15 ½ miles) from Madrid. The day will be animated by youth groups of the Spanish Passionist Family.  Coaches will be provided to transport everybody there and back.

I close with the assurance that once the plans for this encounter have been confirmed, all the necessary information will be duly relayed to you.

Fraternally,
(Most Rev) Ottaviano D’Egidio, C.P.

Filibert with the Pope

Here’s a short message from Fr. Rick Frechette.

“We have 17 young children from St Helene training in Italy for a soccer final in South Africa in October. Yesterday we were in Rome, and I was given the chance to present one of the children to the Pope. Here is Filiberto. He was trying to give rosary beads to the Pope as a present and the Pope thought he just wanted them blessed so they went back and forth between their hands until finally the Pope understood they were a gift.”

A Moment in Time

Photographer and retreatant Kevin Mihaly submitted a photo taken at Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center to the New York Times “A Moment in Time”project.

“A Moment in Time” consists of a virtual Earth covered by stacks of photos corresponding to where they were taken all at the same time at 15:00 U.T.C. on Sunday May 2, 2010.

The first link sends you to the general site if you want to spend some time and take a look at the entire project and see the many images that were taken across the world at this specific moment.  Be aware that the site is a little slow, so use this link when you have a little time to browse.  The 2nd link sends you directly to the Holy Family image.  When you’re at the photo of Holy Family, please click the recommend button which will place the photo higher up in the stack of images.
